Marriage with a Donkey

or marriage a donkey? Whatever, street photography is lives from the contingency. And here I "stumbled" into a video performance of an New Yorker artist: A young lady fully dressed as bride together with a real donkey walking through the streets of the city searching the registrar's office in an old city hall. Most people who where witness oft this spectacle understand the metaphor and enjoy this "drama". The lack of understanding was only with a few. Interestingly the donkey participate well-behaved with this nearly till the end. On the last few meters it appears that he realized what will happen and now he lives up to one's name. A lot of manipulation was necessary to bring the show to an end.

New York - New York

During the last twenty years or more I visit no American city so often then New York. And I visit a lot of countries and cities not only in the US. But New York is different and - that's important for me - New York is NOT America. Everytime when I'm there I found something different which I haven't seen before. The city has an enormously dynamic only comparable with Shanghai or Moscow with some constraints. And these dynamic is not only limited on the economic but also in all other area like art, fashion, ecology, traffic, cultural and so on. Within this small picture series I will show some things which impress me beside the people of New York.

To be in Motion

New York is multicultural and always in motion. I have never seen so many human races on one place then in New York. All colours, all languages or religions you can find on a relative small area. Americans, Europeans, Asians, Africans, Indians or Southamericans they all live quit and peaceful together united in the wish to quest for happiness. And it's these overwhelming volition which define an New Yorker as special spezies. But they are not alone. Sometimes I have the feeling that on every New Yorker comes one foreign visitor. Again this picture series is a declaration of love to them.

Closed Steel Smeltery

As engineer I’m faszinated by technology. The photos in this series were taken up in a 90 years old, now closed smeltery located in the north of the so called Ruhr Area - a former heavy industrial steel and coal mining district. The 200 hectar large area is today a public park to document the industrial alteration of this region. All technical elements of a steel smeltery process are conserved and allow a deep view in the steel production process. Nobody can withdraw the clear lines of this monument.

Mining Tools and other Things

I'm a child of the Ruhr Area. An area where 5 million people live and work and it's an area in change. Thirty years ago an heavy industry area with a lot of steel smelteries, coal minings, cokeries, refineries and chemical industries. Today the smelteries, mining and cokeries are on the withdrawal. From more then 40 coal minings you will find today only a few left and they will give up finally in 2018. Well, this is not a moment to get melancholy because the change brings back a lot of advantages: Clean air, blue sky, clean water, green trees, new technologies and so on. But a generation of former workers lost their job and also their identity. Within this small series I want to clip their working tools which guide them for their whole working live.

Dilapidated Cathedrals of Work

Overall in the Ruhr Area you can find these dilapidated cathedrals of work. In parts more then 100 years old. Industrial buildings of  powerful architecture, sometimes dire and sometimes of exciting breezy elegancy. Only a few of them wil be conserved to document the industrial history and separate identity of this region. The rest of this monumental architecture is waiting for demolition. And therefore this will not happen overnight the nature is coming to capture these areas back. Again some pictures of this series show objects which are already down and therefore history.

The End of an Era

To tie in with the former gallery I show here pieces and tools mainly ready to end up in the scrap press or to be demolished. Many of these look already real miserable others have also in breakup an discret elegancy certainly someone has a reference to. However none will ever use this parts again. Therefore they document the end of the era of heavy (dirty and loud) industry in this region.

See and be seen

As street photographer I always look for the "special moments". Events like carneval, city festivals or fairs are predestinated for this. The pictures in this series are all from the CSD (Christopher Street Day) in Cologne over several years. Compare to those CSD's in London, New York or San Fransico the Cologne CSD is in my opinion the most authentic. This has something to do with the carnaval in this city and the mentality of the natives. Most people are used to exhibit. Therefore it's a large party between the attendats and the observers at the side. A wonderful easy going atmophere.
